Nice Things #4

Wowee! April, already?? What’s happening, guys?? I don’t know if it’s just me but I’m starting to panic a little bit over how quickly this year is flying. To distract myself, and maybe you too, from that and to help just dig our heads further into the Sand of Denial, here’s a list of nice things!

  • “A Spool of Blue Thread” by Anne Tyler has been out for a little while already but I haven’t got round to buying it yet. Well. That’s not entirely accurate. I have banned myself from buying more books momentarily *hangs head in shame* But! You can read a sample of it right here!
  • Paper Fashion is one of my favourite Facebook pages to follow – she makes shadow dancers out of anything and everything. The photos she posts always manage to amaze me – this is an example of one of my favourites.
  • “People are really excited to do something analog and creative, at a time when we’re all so overwhelmed by screens and the Internet. And colouring is not as scary as a blank sheet of paper of canvas. It’s a great way to de-stress.” – Johanna Basford, who has released two gorgeous colouring books for adults. You can read the interview and see some photos of Johanna’s work space here. Would you use a colouring book for adults?
  • This is one of my favourite smells andΒ words, and I had no idea the word was of Australian origin! Does anyone know the Doctor Who reference? Bonus points if you do! (Just kidding, I love you all equally).
  • Can you believe you can download these beautiful bird prints for free? Get on it! I like them in the white frames, but I think light tan ones would look great, too! Birds not your thing? How about some great botanical prints instead? Also free!
  • Feeling crafty? And also maybe a little…foxy? Try this! How cute is he?
  • Fellow blogger and just all-round lovely person, Annette, wrote a post about the very important topic ofΒ self-care over at I Give You The Verbs. Check it out! I’ve got a post about this topic in the works – keep your eyes peeled.
  • The world can be a bit of a depressing place sometimes, especially when we think about the future of our dear planet. So help the ol’ girl out and have a look at some easy things you can do to be a little kinder to her AND save money.
Hm. Well. I think that list helped me keep my mind of the fact that we’re already a quarter of the way through 2015 for a brief moment or two. I hope it helped you out too! Did you see anything you liked? What are you looking forward to in the month of April?

Good list Jacquie! Don't even talk to me about how it's already April. Not cool! Only two months left to prepare for my trip. Trying not to panic. Anyway, I really like those botanical prints. I can't believe someone would give them away. I was wondering about this colouring in business. I thought about getting one for the plane, but maybe I'd just look like a weirdo with my pencils rolling every where? What do you think? I've bookmarked the article to read later. I enjoyed Annette's post on self-care, it's very timely since my body is failing me over here. First time in a long time that I haven't been able to kick a cold with Vitamin C. Feeling a bit blue and thinking about this whole self-care bizo. Lots to ponder in your list today. Thanks for compiling it. πŸ™‚

It really is not cool, isn't it?? Oh boy, that's come around quickly, hey? Are you starting to prepare for your trip and get things in order?

That's what I thought, too – I was surprised someone made such beautiful prints freely available to people. But I sure am glad they did!

Haha I think you should go for the colouring in on the plane. You've gotta have something to do – it's a long-ass flight. Everyone else will just be supremely jealous of your book and your pencils.

Mm for once I have managed to avoid falling sick during a holiday (have I just jinxed it now??) but am still trying to remember to take care of myself all year round and not just in a physical sense. That's why I'm actually drafting a post about it myself – it's only become clear to me just how important it is more recently.

I'm sorry to hear you're feeling blue πŸ™ That's no good at all. I hope you're having a lovely relaxing day and getting some cuddles from Pesto. That's sure to make you feel better! x

Hi Jacquie! I love your list. And I don't want to be boring but I agree with Laura – those botanical prints are uber cool! I sent the link to my Mum who is a keen gardener, thinking she might like them too. She has been in the same 'gardening club' for the last 40 YEARS (unbelievable). Maybe I can try to find a colour printing shop here in China and decorate out little apartment with them…there is actually IKEA here for some frames (IKEA is clearly taking over the world). I used to love colouring in when I was little, but us adults don't seem to do it…we should! Why not? I remember winning a colouring-in competition at our local library when I was about 7, I won some coloured pencils and it was pretty much the best day of my life up until that point πŸ™‚ Also wanted to say thanks for following Nanjing Nian on Bloglovin…I have reached 5 followers! Yes! Major milestone! I'm very new to this blogging business so will be hopping around the blogs looking for guidance, and yours is most definitely on my list. Have a good week! x Isabel

    Hi Isabel!

Thank you – I'm glad you liked this month's list! I always love putting them together.

Wowee! Forty years?? That's a long-ass time. I guess that means she's found a group of people she really likes, which is so lovely! I hope she likes the prints too πŸ™‚ And yes, IKEA is most likely taking over the world haha. I do love it though.

I agree! More adults should give colouring in a red hot go again! It would definitely calm me down and help me to zone out I think. I think if I won a competition and got some pencils as a prize that would also pretty much be the best day ever, even today!

And no problem – your blog looks so interesting. I'm looking forward to reading it – life is a bit hectic at the moment so I often have to schedule reading time especially for blogs and when I do, I'll be sure to hit up Nanjing Nian. I'm also very new to blogging – hasn't quite been a full year yet – but I'd be more than happy to have a chat or try to answer any questions (key word is "try" :P) if you have any. Feel free to email me (birdandfox@gmail.com). Thank you for your comment and your lovely words πŸ˜€ Hope you have a great week, too! x
